Microbial metabolism: optimal control of uptake versus synthesis

چکیده

Microbes require several complex organic molecules for growth. A species may obtain a required factor by taking up molecules released by other species or by synthesizing the molecule. The patterns of uptake and synthesis set a flow of resources through the multiple species that create a microbial community. This article analyzes a simple mathematical model of the tradeoff between uptake and synthesis. Key factors include the influx rate from external sources relative to the outflux rate, the rate of internal decay within cells, and the cost of synthesis. Aspects of demography also matter, such as cellular birth and death rates, the expected time course of a local resource flow, and the associated lifespan of the local population. Spatial patterns of genetic variability and differentiation between populations may also strongly influence the evolution of metabolic regulatory controls of individual species and thus the structuring of microbial communities. The widespread use of optimality approaches in recent work on microbial metabolism has ignored demography and genetic structure.

The Effects of Use Medicinal Plants on Rumen Fermentation Parameters in Ruminants

Rumen is a persistent and specific ecosystem consists of bacteria, protozoa and fungus where feed fermentation takes place in it. Produced Hydrogen in rumen can be used in the synthesis of the volatile fatty acids and the microbial protein and its excess would be eliminated through the production of Methane by methanogenesis. Nutritionists have tried to find ways to decrease loss and energy and...

Analysis of the Global Ocean Sampling (GOS) Project for Trends in Iron Uptake by Surface Ocean Microbes

Microbial metagenomes are DNA samples of the most abundant, and therefore most successful organisms at the sampling time and location for a given cell size range. The study of microbial communities via their DNA content has revolutionized our understanding of microbial ecology and evolution. Iron availability is a critical resource that limits microbial communities' growth in many oceanic areas...

Effect of Magnetite Nanoparticles on Vegetative Growth, Physiological Parameters and Iron Uptake in Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium) ‘Salvador’

Despite the increasing rate of nanoparticles (NPS) production and their application in agriculture, few studies have focused on their effect on plant growth. So, the present research was conducted in laboratory and greenhouse conditions. First, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONS) with a humic acid coating (Fe3O4/HA) were synthesized in laboratory...

Metabolism and Lipogenesis in Isolated Fat-Cells EFFECT OF THE AMOUNT OF GLUCOSE UPTAKE ON THE RATES OF THE PENTOSE PHOSPHATE CYCLE AND OF FATTY ACID SYNTHESIS By H. KATHER, M. RIVERA and K. BRAND

In order to study the quantitative relationship between fatty acid synthesis and pentose phosphate-cycle activity under different hormonal and dietary conditions affecting the extent of glucose uptake, cells isolated from rat epididymal adipose tissue were incubated in bicarbonate buffer containing [U-14C]-, [1-14C]or [6-14C]-glucose. From the amount of glucose taken up, the production of lacta...
